The Semantic Vertical Timeline

The Timeline is the core of GitSight. It transforms a standard linear log into a high-fidelity “Version-First” architecture.

1. Versions (Left Column)

All tags from your Git history are elevated as primary version markers. These are the “Major Milestones” in your engineering journey.

  • Click to Focus: Selecting a version will isolate all associated commits and metrics.
  • Meta-Insights: Each version shows its total commit count, contributor density, and primary prefix dominance.

2. Commits (Right Column)

Commits are grouped logically between versions. GitSight’s engine uses prefixes to categorize them:

  • feat: (New Capabilities)
  • fix: (Stability & Repair)
  • refactor: (Architectural Improvements)
  • docs: (Guidance)

3. The “Pulse” Indicator

The timeline is more than a list; it’s a diagnostic tool.

Look for hotspots (unusually high commit density in a short window) and gaps (long periods without versioned releases).

Actionable Intelligence

  • Identify Risk: Is a version 80% fix: commits? That release may need a quality audit.
  • Celebrate Velocity: Note the versions with the highest feat: density.
